A vernal pool is an important part of the ecosystem, supplying breeding and feeding grounds for creatures that could not survive in open water. Join us one hour after sunset during March, April and May to monitor the swamp as part of a state-wide preservation effort. We'll listen to a recording of frog calls before venturing out to the swamp. Flashlights in hand, we'll hike to the edge of the swamp. Then, lightless, we'll listen quietly for mating calls. Some months the sound is intense; other months we hear only distant calls. Then the salamander hunt begins! What an exciting adventure, searching the dark swamp, flashlights in hand, for any sign of movement! Bring the whole family on this late-night adventure. Wear mud boots and bring a strong flashlight for each person attending.
$2/person or $5/family.

Earthhuggers is a preschool enrichment program integrating nature into all aspects of the day, including outdoor adventure, indoor discovery time, math, literature, music, and art for children 3-4. Awareness for children 5-6 provides short story, craft, and snack. Discovery for ages 7-9 provides introduction to the topic and moderate hikes. Topics include maple syrup making, the arrival of spring, frogs and ponds, and much more.
